Step 1: Ask faculty members to serve on thesis/dissertation committee; seek out one of them to serve as committee chair.
The following criteria must be met when establishing my committee:
- Your chair and a majority of the members of the committee must be full members of your department’s graduate faculty;
- The other members may be associate graduate faculty from inside or outside your department or even people from outside the university who may bring special and useful expertise to your study;
- The majority of members come from the student's department/school;
- If any of the above criteria are not met, an exception may be requested from the Graduate School.
Step 2: The Proposal
- The Proposal Approval form will be completed, which officially establishes my dissertation committee who will help me establish research question(s) and methodology.
- After I have thoroughly outlined my intended research, I will set up the proposal meeting where I will lay out my intended line of research, identify its scope, explain research protocol, and establish a timeline. Research involving human subjects is overseen by the Institutional Review Board (IRB) and may require approval of the appropriate committee before starting any data collection.
- At the proposal meeting, the Proposal Approval form is to be completed and signed by the committee. This form requires IRB approval (if necessary) and a completed copyright checklist.
- No data can be collected until this form is approved by the Graduate School!
